Dutch Day Trip: Zaanse Schans

Entering the quaint village of Zaanse Schans feels like stepping back in time to a simpler life.  Boasting 6 unique windmills (all of which are open for tours), the picturesque neighborhood filled with colorful, historic buildings and museums follows the shoreline of the Zaan River.  With crafts and interactive activities for the whole family, Zaanse Schans provides an idyllic Dutch day-trip experience.

The Windmills
Each windmill in Zaanse Schans demonstrates the production of various commodities from spices and paint to ground wood and stone.  Originally built throughout the Zaan region, these windmills were relocated to the village of Zaanse Schans, thus preserving its history in one location.  Dating back as early as the 17th century, the historic windmills have been transported to Zaanse Schans since the 1960s.  The local area surrounding the village also hosts 13 additional windmills to visit.

The Original Albert Heijn
Famous throughout the Netherlands as one of the largest Dutch supermarket chains, the Albert Heijn general store originally began in 1887.  The old store located in Zaanse Schans displays historic merchandise, scales, and records in an interactive museum.  Store workers answer questions and give a brief history of Albert Heijn’s humble beginnings.

The Klompen Museum
A trip to Zaanse Schans is not complete without visiting the wooden shoe workshop and clog museum.  Showcasing wooden shoes from around the world and their uses in everyday life, the clog museum features a large collection of ornate and detailed wooden shoes, as well as industrial and practical ones.  A brief demonstration of the shoe-making process is given in the workshop, and clogs of various shapes and sizes are available for purchase in the souvenir shop.
