Pumpkin-Picking by the Castle

Each year at the end of September, Kriegerhof Farms in Langerwehe (DE) opens its fields for one weekend only to visitors in search of magical autumn festivities.  With live music, crafts and activities for the kids, specialty food, and LOTS of pumpkins, a day at the Kürbismarkt is fun for the whole family.

Hills and fields are transformed into themed pumpkin patches, hosting various gourds from jack-o-laterns to jack-be-littles, cinderella pumpkins and red kuris.  Guests are welcome to bring their own bags or use plastic ones provided to carry home their treasures.  Prices are posted by pumpkin variety and are tallied up when you exit the pumpkin patch area, so there is plenty of time to wander around exploring the beautiful pumpkin decorations within the enclosed patch (and make sure you find the perfect pumpkin!).  Free recipe cards are also available for aspiring chefs wanting to make use of their unique squash.

Yet pumpkins are not the only products available, as all kinds of handmade items like pumpkin wine and beer, pumpkin syrup, pumpkin jam, and much more are also on sale.  Food stands line the field selling pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin ice cream, and even chocolate-covered pumpkin seeds.  Vendors and artists selling handmade autumn decor like wicker baskets and wreaths are mingled between the scrumptious food stands, as the whole event culminates at the the top of the hill with the pumpkin patch.

If you go:
Head towards Schlossstr. 2 in Langerwehe next to Schloss Merode, and then follow the signs for Kriegerhof Parking.  Entrance to the festival is 6€ for adults and free for children under age 14.  Keep your ticket, because the entrance fee can be credited towards your purchase of pumpkins!
